Biodiesel Definition

—Today Biodiesel  fuel is an fuel alternative for classical motors.This bio fuel is made from vegetable oil or animal fact. Then it'is transformed by trans-esterfication ( Oil + ethanol=biodiesel)

 In general : Trans-esterfication is ester + ethanol =another ester.

But we have choosen ethanol because methanol is obtain by natural gaz.

Biodiesel fuel in industry

—In industry Biodiesel is made from oleaginous plants and ethanol.

1 T of oil + 100 kg of  ethanol = 1 T of biodiesel

 The chemical method is called trans-esterfication. INEOS is an industrial example to this companie.

- Biodiesel fuel production

 

Biodiesel fuel Experiment Protocol :

Materials:

 

-2 round-bottom flasks

-heating plate

-cooling tube

-250 ml. separating funnel

- 100 ml. graduated cylinder

-25 ml. graduated cylinder

-separatory funnel

 

Safety equipment and chemicals products:

 

-Lab coat, safety glasses, safety gloves

-100 mL colza oil

-50 mL ethanol

-Lye

-Pumice stone

Procedure:

-Take 100 mL of oil, 50 mL of ethanol and with a funnel, transfer this mixture into a

round-bottom flask. Add the pumice stone.

-Add a few mL of lye.

-Prepare the reflux assembly and turn on the heating plate to 45-50 °c during one hour.

-Then, transfer the liquid into a separatory funnel. 

 

 

Second Protocol :

 

Materials:

 

-Erlenmeyer flask

-Heating plate

-Thermometer

-250 ml. separating funnel

- 100 ml. graduated cylinder

-50 ml. graduated cylinder

-Magnetique stirrer

- pHmeter

 

 

Safety equipment and chemicals products:

 

-Lab coat, safety glasses, safety gloves

-100 mL colza oil

-50 mL ethanol

-Lye

-Pumice stone

-Ethanoïque Acid

-Wash Bottle with distilled water

 

Procedure:

-Take 100 mL of oil and with a funnel, transfer this oil into erlenmeyer flask. Heat oil to 60 °C.

- Take 50 mL of ethanol and add 0,23 g of lye. Mix with magnetique stirrer.

-Next when the temperature is reached transfer the oil in a beaker with ethanol and lye (ethanoate ion)

-Add few mL of ethanoïque acid to neutralize this mixture. Check out with pHmeter.

-Then, transfer the liquid into a separatory funnel. And clean it with the wash bottle.
